Andreea Ulmeanu

Andreea Elena Ulmeanu was born on May 15th, 1984. Her gymnastics career began in her hometown of Timisoara the local CSS club. She showed promise as a youngster, and her first major national meet was the 1993 Romanian Junior Nationals. At only nine years of age, Andreea placed third all-around in the Categorie IV. In 1996, Andreea was selected as part of the junior national team, and moved to Onesti, where the national junior center was located.(Deva is now home to the junior national team) There she trained alongside Andreea Isarescu, and Andreea Raducan. While at CSS Onesti, she was coached by Stefan Gal and Clementa Garabet. As part of the team, Andreea represented Romania internationally and gained valuable experience. After competing in the 1998 National Championships, Ulmi was chosen to come to Deva and train with the senior national team. In 1999, Andreea was selected to be Romania’s alternate for the World Championships. She held the same position a year later at the 2000 Olympic Games. Although many forecasted that Andreea, known as "Gica" to her teammates, would quietly disappear with the new generation of Romanian gymnasts becoming eligible for senior competition, she’s proved them wrong so far. A broken thumb prevented her from competing in the all around at the recent Goodwill Games; however, 'Gica' has recovered, and has been selected for the Worlds team.
