In 1997 Olimpia Popa was one of Romania's top juniors and seemed to have a bright future ahead of her. She followed in the footsteps of teammate Simona Amanar, all the way from SC Farul in Constata to Cetate Deva. She competed as a junior in three ITC's and also in the 1998 Jr. Europeans. 1999 was the year Olimpia became old enough to compete as a senior and she looked to possibly have a chance of making the worlds team that year, or near in the future. Unfortunately, a back injury in the middle of the year forced her to give up the sport and return home to Constata.
